Security Alert – U. S. Embassy Gaborone, Botswana (February 6, 2019)

Security Messages and Warnings

Location: Central Business District, Gaborone, Botswana

Event: Recent power outages have affected at least one hotel in the Central Business District of Gaborone, causing the common hallway doors in parts of the hotel to lock, preventing egress from those floors affected.

U.S. citizens are advised to check with their hotel to see whether measures are in place to ensure proper egress from their floor (exit and fire doors operational) in the event of a power failure.

Actions to Take:
  • Seek safe lodging when traveling.
  • Verify a safe and operational escape route in the event of an emergency.
  • Review your personal security plans.
  • Have evacuation plans that do not rely on U.S. government assistance.
