Notice of Funding Opportunity
The Public Affairs Office requests proposals from potential implementing partners for the 2019 – 2021 English Access Microscholarship Program (Access). The purpose of the Access program is to provide disadvantaged youth with an opportunity to learn the English language and enhance leadership through teaching the basics of American culture and values of democratic development and civic engagement. The program benefits secondary school students from underprivileged families and provides after-school instruction and intensive sessions. The Access program must provide two years of English study, consisting of at least 180 hours of instruction per year. To be eligible for consideration, applicants must be currently engaged in an English language teaching program. Only non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are eligible to apply for this program. Service providers from rural areas of Botswana are encouraged to apply.

The goal of the Access program is to equip talented students who possess a minimal knowledge of English with effective communication and critical thinking skills through meaningful interactions, cooperative learning strategies, and real-life contexts. Selected participants must be bright, economically-disadvantaged secondary school students with a beginning level of English.
There is not a monetary value attached to the definition of economically disadvantaged, as this is a relative term and varies based on local environments. Essentially, students should come from the lowest socio-economic bracket of the country/region.
